Managed AWS Servers

Managed AWS Servers

WWG’s managed AWS server services are for companies that run production workloads on AWS and want an external team to operate them day to day: a managed service provider, not Amazon’s own AWS Managed Services programme. Engineers take on monitoring, patching, security, backup and recovery, sizing and cost control; you keep ownership of the account and the workloads. The service starts with an assessment of your current environment and runs on a monthly fee with an agreed scope.

Definition

What are AWS managed services

AWS managed services, as a managed service provider delivers them, are an arrangement where an external team runs a company’s AWS estate day to day: provisioning and sizing instances, applying patches, watching monitoring and alerts, controlling cost, and handling incidents. The client keeps ownership of the account and the workloads; the operational work moves out.

The engagement

Managed AWS servers in concrete terms

Duration
Ongoing, month by month, after an initial assessment and implementation phase whose length depends on the size of the estate.
Start
With an assessment of your current AWS environment, followed by a plan for optimisation, security and scalability and its implementation.
Who does the work
WWG cloud engineers. A named owner answers for your environment and is the person you call.
What we need from you
Access to the AWS account with appropriate permissions, an overview of the workloads, the people to ask about them, one point of contact for decisions.
Output
Servers monitored 24/7, patched, backed up with tested recovery, secured to AWS standards and right-sized; a regular optimisation review with recommendations.
Format
A monthly service with an agreed scope, minimum term and notice period. The account and the workloads remain yours.

The fee is a monthly amount, set after the assessment according to the servers and services in scope and the monitoring, support and backup requirements. The AWS bill is separate and paid to Amazon. We do not publish a price list.

Comparison

Managed AWS servers and the alternatives

Running servers on AWS can be done by Amazon’s own programme, by your own staff, by a traditional hosting company or by a managed service provider. The names overlap; the work does not.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The managed AWS server service includes 24/7 monitoring of your servers with real-time alerting, security management (firewalls, access control, encryption, in line with AWS security standards), regular backups with tested recovery, performance optimisation and right-sizing to reduce cost, and scalable configurations that grow with your business. It follows five steps: assessment of your current AWS environment, a plan for optimisation, security and scalability, implementation of best practices across your servers, ongoing management with updates and troubleshooting, and regular optimisation reviews.
AWS Managed Services (AMS) is Amazon’s own enterprise programme for operating AWS accounts under its operating model, aimed at large organisations. An AWS managed service provider, which is what WWG is on this page, is an external engineering team that runs your AWS servers for you, sized for a mid-market company: your account, your workloads, our engineers doing the daily operations, a named owner you can call. If you searched for the Amazon programme, aws.amazon.com is the right place; if you want a provider that operates your servers, this page is.
Managed and unmanaged AWS services differ in who does the operations. With an unmanaged service, such as a plain EC2 instance, you install, patch, back up, monitor and scale it yourself. With a managed AWS service, such as RDS for databases or EKS for Kubernetes, Amazon runs the underlying software and you configure it. Neither runs your application for you: someone still has to watch the alerts, apply your patches, control cost and handle incidents. That layer is what a managed service provider like WWG covers, on both managed and unmanaged AWS services.
Fully managed AWS services are those where Amazon operates the whole stack under the service, for example Lambda, DynamoDB or S3: no servers to patch, capacity handled by AWS. They reduce the operational work but do not remove it. Someone must still design how the services fit together, set up monitoring and alerting, enforce access control, watch the bill, and act when an alert fires at three in the morning. For a mid-market company without an operations team, that is the work a provider does; for a large team, it may stay in-house.
Yes, hybrid setups are covered. We integrate AWS servers with systems that stay on your premises or on another cloud, and we manage the AWS side, including the connectivity, monitoring and backup that cross the boundary. What stays outside AWS is agreed in the assessment, along with who is responsible for it. If a full move to AWS is the goal, our cloud migration service handles the transfer and this service takes over afterwards.
Server security in the managed service rests on the practices AWS itself recommends: encryption of data at rest and in transit, firewalls and security groups that expose only what must be exposed, access control with least privilege and multi-factor authentication, regular patching, and monitoring that alerts on unusual activity. The assessment step records the current state against these controls; the implementation step closes the gaps; ongoing management keeps them closed. For regulated environments, our compliance and security auditing service adds an independent review.
The managed service usually reduces AWS costs, because the assessment typically finds oversized instances, unused resources and storage nobody cleaned up, and the optimisation reviews keep them from coming back. We apply FinOps practices: right-sizing, reserved capacity where usage is stable, and monitoring of spend by service. We do not promise a figure before the assessment, because the saving depends on how the estate was built. Our fee is separate from the AWS bill; both are visible to you.
The cost of managed AWS services has two components. The AWS bill, paid to Amazon, depends on the instances, storage and traffic you use; a server on AWS costs whatever you consume, with no fixed price. The provider’s fee, paid to WWG, is a monthly amount set after the assessment, according to the number of servers and services in scope, the monitoring and support hours agreed, and the backup and security requirements. We do not publish a price list; the scope, and therefore the fee, is fixed before the service starts.
The service starts with an assessment of your current AWS environment, which takes as long as the size of the estate requires and produces the plan for optimisation, security and scalability. Implementation of the plan follows, then ongoing management begins. The service runs month by month, with regular optimisation reviews, for as long as you need it; the minimum term and the notice period are agreed in the contract, not imposed afterwards.
WWG cloud engineers do the work, with a named owner who answers for your environment and is the person you call. From you we need access to the AWS account with the appropriate permissions, an overview of the workloads that run on it and what they are for, the people to ask when an application behaves oddly, and one point of contact for decisions. Your team continues to develop and release; we run what it runs on.
If you stop the service, you keep everything: the AWS account is yours, the configurations and any infrastructure code are in your repositories, and the documentation describes how the environment is run. We hand over to your team or to another provider in an orderly way, within the notice period agreed in the contract. Nothing in the setup depends on WWG remaining, and that is a deliberate choice: the service is an arrangement, not a lock-in.
Any industry that runs production software on AWS benefits from managed services: retail and e-commerce, healthcare, finance, logistics. What matters more than the sector is the situation: small and medium-sized businesses that want operations handled without hiring for them, startups scaling faster than their team, and e-commerce companies expanding into new markets with traffic they cannot predict. If your AWS estate is a single test server, you do not need this; if a night of downtime costs you revenue, you probably do.
